Dear Larchmont Fairfax Families:
As we embark upon this long weekend, we hope you and your families are all doing well and enjoying the time together. There were several really positive events that took place this week for teachers, students and parents alike that we wanted to take a moment to reflect on.

You'll notice the image to the right. This Jamboard was one of the byproducts from our teacher professional development this past Wednesday. We began our anti-bias trainings for the year (which we'll continue once per month) with a closer look at culturally responsive teaching. After laying the groundwork with some of this theoretical knowledge, well continue the work by delving into our recently purchased anti-bias curriculum and each grade level will work on a plan to weave these important teachings into our signature projects. We're excited about this work and will share more about how it unfolds as the year progresses.

On the student front, we got to enjoy our first ever virtual Community Group in honor of Peach Day this Monday. Jamia spearheaded this magnificent event which brought our entire campus together on Zoom for the first time. We learned about the peace movement and then went into breakout rooms to draw the ways in which we envision peace in our lives. We wrapped things up with a beautiful Crosby, Stills and Nash song (Teach Your Children) sung by our very own Cheryl and her husband, Patrick. We were so happy to have ALL of our students together to discuss the things that mean the most to us as a school community, and we will definitely plan more community group activities soon!

For parents, our Social Emotional Learning Specialist, Maja Watkins, led us in a parent coffee about improv games you can play at home that are not only fun, but that also get to the heart of many social-emotional learning goals, including turning a negative into a positive and learning to go with the flow. If you missed the coffee, you can view the recording here: Improv Parent Coffee.
Finally, our Annual Giving Drive continues on and it's our one and only fundraiser this year. We're counting on hitting our target to make sure we can continue to provide the high quality programming and enrichment offerings we've done now for many years. Please join me in making your contribution (however big or small) this weekend. LARCHMONT ANNUAL GIVING DRIVE
Have a good long weekend, and we will see you back at school on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Go Larchmont!

PE UPDATE - NEW PE TEACHER STARTING THIS WEEK

We have hired a new PE teacher while Alan is out on leave! Cynthia Lay will begin on Tuesday, Sept 29th. All PE classes will revert back to regular times as they were with Coach Alan. All teachers will be sharing with you a NEW LINK for PE class for Cynthia.
Cynthia Lay's bio: Cynthia Lay is a graduate of New York University with a BFA in classical theater. Before becoming a mom, Cynthia subbed for LAUSD from 2001-2006 and taught at the Chris Yoon Education Clinic. She has also subbed extensively for Larchmont Charter School in recent months. Cynthia has practiced yoga for 14 years which we believe will come in very handy during PE class! She has three kids that she spends most of her free time with taking them to the beach, musical theater and on hikes. She loves to be active, whether it is hiking, swimming, or going for walks. In her free time, she reads fiction, visits national parks and plays with the family dog George Michael and loves trying new teas.
Please join me in welcoming Cynthia to the Fairfax campus!
LOOP MEETING

Join us this coming Friday for our next Larchmont Organization of Parents meeting (8:45 am). You'll learn more about the work of our campus committees, and can connect with each group if you're still looking for ways to be involved. It's also just a good opportunity to touch base with other Larchmont families. We look forward to seeing you there!

COUNSELING SERVICES AT LARCHMONT

For several years, Larchmont Charter School has partnered with the Southern CA Counseling Center to provide free counseling services to our students. They have offered us a tremendous resource to support our students' social emotional needs.
The Southern CA Counseling Center has a limited number of spaces available for students this year, too. If you feel that your child could benefit from these free counseling services, please send an email to Mersedeh at mersedeh.emrani@larchmontcharter.org and let us know what type of support your child would benefit from.
The services will take place on Zoom using play based counseling techniques.

PARENT CONFERENCES

Our PARENT CONFERENCES will take place between October 19- 23. Last year, we made a decision to move conferences up from December to October so we could provide an earlier touchpoint with families, though this year that was unexpectedly partially accomplished with our virtual home visits at the start of the year.
Signups will be sent out via Signup Genius in the next week! Please be on the lookout for the email.
Please note that we have minimum day release schedule for all of conference week so that teachers have time to meet with families in the afternoon. That means that Zoom schedules will be modified for conference week and classes will end earlier than regular day schedules. We will be sending out the times to you with your Signup Genius link and in teacher messages.
LCS FAIRFAX VIRTUAL BOOK FAIR

Our fabulous book fair committee is diligently working on finding a way for us to hold our annual book fair virtually.
The book fair will take place during conference week from Oct 19-23 and a portion of proceeds go to benefit Larchmont Charter School!
Please stay tuned for details about our virtual book fair!
