welcome to larchmont charter school

Letter from the Principal

To Our LCS Community:

Thank you so much for making my first semester as LCS principal such a warm and productive one! As I begin my second semester here, I continue to be amazed at the dedication and energy of our LCS community. The teachers display an inspiring depth of knowledge and it’s been exciting to collaborate with our new executive director, Brian Johnson. Our LCS parent group continues to be one of the greatest resources available to me. Every time I wonder how I’m going to get something done, a parent or staff member steps up to help!

A major focus of my first semester was the establishment of our Youth Policy Institute (YPI) After School Program. With a supported homework period, enrichment classes, and structured outdoor play, this program has become a real asset to our school. The grant we received from the YPI has made it possible to employ our own teaching assistants after school and they have been a pivotal component in getting this wonderful program off the ground.

The Annual Pledge Drive calling campaign recently drew to a close and I’m happy to report that our parent body pledged over $434,000! The Pledge Drive proceeds are an impressive start towards our fundraising goals, but we need to remember that this amount covers only half of our state-funding gap. In the coming semester, we should be diligent about asking friends and family for their financial support. The Second Annual Jogathon offered a great, organic way to reach out to potential supporters and raised close to $60,000! We need to continue our emphasis on outreach for our many other fundraising opportunities, including Garage-a-rama and our grand finale, the Fiesta.

As we proudly celebrate the approval of our charter by LAUSD and the official go-ahead on our middle school, this spring promises to be an especially eventful one for LCS. Our charter renewal is a great relief, of course, but I’m especially excited about moving forward with our middle school. There’s a real shortage of great public middle schools in Los Angeles and the prospect of providing an inspiring alternative is very exciting. Middle-school students have tremendous energy and idealism and a central goal of our program is to help our students harness and enjoy those traits that are unique to their age. What an exciting opportunity to offer children and society a new vision of what it means to be on the cusp of adulthood, and offer a high quality public education to a student body that mirrors the diversity of our community.

Sincerely,

Dolores Patton
