LaFayette Park Place Campus (7-8)

Hello from LCS at LFP 7-8!

I am so excited to serve as the Middle School Leader at Larchmont Charter School's Lafayette Park Campus.  I have worked in education in Los Angeles for over 10 years, and it is my honor to join the LCS team this year.  I moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to participate in the Teach for America program and completed my Master's degree in Secondary Education at Loyola Marymount University.  After teaching, I spent two years as a Mathematics Curriculum Specialist, where I coached teachers to improve their teaching craft, led professional development training sessions, and created curriculum and assessments that were used district-wide.  I have also worked as an Assistant Principal, where I focused on supporting and growing school culture and meeting the diverse needs of our students, particularly those with special needs and our English language learners.

Prior to my roles in school leadership, I taught at the middle school level for seven years, so working with adolescents is my educational area of expertise (and my favorite).  Middle School can at times be an awkward and stressful age, as students are trying out different things, coming into their own identity, and building their independence.  Through positive role modeling, mentoring, and reflection, students come out stronger and more ready for the challenges of life.  I am excited to work with Larchmont's seventh and eighth graders to make their development into young adults as positive and graceful as possible.  Here at LCS at LFP 7-8, we do that in the following ways:

  • Focus on Diversity:  We believe in the power of bringing people together to make the community even stronger.  Through structures like daily homeroom classes and weekly assemblies, we help to empower our students to learn about themselves, about each other, about the world around them, and about how to make a positive difference.  Here, we create global citizens who can work together to make the world a better place.
  • Constructivist Learning: We believe that student-ownership of learning leads to deeper understanding.  Our staff engages students in a variety of projects, group-work tasks, and inquiry-based assignments.  Here, we create life-long learners who are curious and persistent.
  • Daily Enrichment: We believe that well-rounded students are best supported in a well-rounded program.  In addition to math, science, English, and history, all of our students take PE, Spanish, and two additional elective classes.  Our course offerings include Yearbook, Science Fair, Yoga, Art, Music Appreciation, Mock Trial, Theater Arts, Programming, Cooking, Leadership, Essentials, Basketball, Fashion Design, Study Skills, and Literary Journal.  Here, we create creative, active, and excited students with a variety of skills and interests.

We look forward to seeing you on campus sometime soon!

Best,

Kelly Bartle
