Academics

Our Exceptional Academic Results

In 2011, Larchmont Charter School (LCS) earned an Academic Performance Index (API) of 931.  An API is determined by the California Department of Education, and is based largely on the results of the California Standards Test (CST), the test more than four million public school students take every year in California.  An API of 931 placed LCS among the top 30 highest performing public schools in Los Angeles (out of almost 900) and among the highest performing schools in the state of California.  The California Department of Education even noted that when compared with other schools across the state with the most similar student populations, LCS was among the top 10% highest performing public schools.

While we are proud of these scores, we do not believe the CSTs (or an API) give us a comprehensive view of the success of our educational program.  CSTs are an important data point and, when combined with our analysis of how our students perform in our own assessments, we then feel we have the complete picture of each student’s success and thus the overall success of our exceptional public education program.  LCS assessments include evaluating how students perform in our engaging projects,

  • teacher-designed assessments,
  • student performances/presentations,
  • writing exercises,
  • science experiments,
  • art and music programs,
  • assessing students’ ability to work with others in collaborative learning groups.

The Diversity of Our Community

Our mission at Larchmont Charter is to provide a racially, culturally, and socio-economically diverse community of students with an exceptional education.

In order to prepare our students to be participants and leaders in one of the most diverse communities in the world, we believe it is important to give our students the opportunity to learn with and from students who together mirror the full diversity of our community.

While we are open to all students no matter where they live (within LAUSD), the vast majority of our students live between West Hollywood and east Hollywood, from the Hills to the 10 Freeway.

According to the U.S. Census and other data, the community LCS draws from is remarkably diverse and our student population reflects that diversity.
